“Hynniewtrep” is a social media blog that delves into a wide
range of issues, particularly those of interest to the Hynniewtrep community.
The term “Hynniewtrep” refers to the original inhabitants of the land,
including groups such as the Khyriem, Pnar, Bhoi, War, Lyngngam, Maram, and
others. The word “hynniewtrep” itself can be translated as “seven huts,”
symbolizing the seven families believed to be the first settlers on Earth
according to local folklore.
The legend goes like this: In ancient times, there were 16
families residing in heaven, where their daily activities were centered. These
families would descend to Earth each day via a mythical Golden Bridge known as
Lum Sohpet Bneng peak—the Hills considered the Navel of Heaven. However, due to
the indifference and ambition of living creatures, a conspiracy arose to sever
the bridge. As a result, while nine families remained in heaven, the remaining
seven families descended to Earth to continue their normal lives.
Tragically, during this time, the navel—the connection point
between Earth and heaven—was destroyed. Earth distanced itself from heaven,
leaving the seven families stranded on our planet while the other nine remained
in their celestial abode. Thus, the name “Hynniewtrep” came into existence to
describe these original settlers.
According to this legendary tale, the Hynniewtrep community
believes that they were Earth’s first inhabitants, and their descendants have
since spread across the globe. Notably, the Khasi people, living near the
mythical navel of heaven, are considered the direct descendants of these
ancient settlers.
