HYNÑIEWTREP NATIONAL LIBERATION COUNCIL (HNLC)

The HNLC means Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council. It was formed in the year of 1992 and came into existence on 1993. Historically, prior to it existence, HNLC was just a public organisation in the Khasi and Jaintia Hills. Due to the blindfold of the Indian government and deprived the right of indigenous citizen, enrages the organisation to turn black and wild, and later changes into militant outfit. Sooner it was on 16th November 2000 that the government of India proscribed it as an outfit, and later continue to lifted the ban.

HNLC is operating in Meghalaya. The area of operation is on Khasi and Jaintia Hills region. HNLC claims to be a representative of the Khasi-Jaintia tribal people.

Its has a complex multiple aim which indirectly implies is to free the Meghalaya from the alleged domination of the Garos and the non-tribal outsiders (the "Dkhars"). It also aim for the freeing of Hynniewtrep from the Hindustani country.

As on wikipedia, HNLC was a by-product of HALC (Hynniewtrep Achik Liberation Council) which included the garo, claiming to represents the garo, khasi and jaintia. Later this HALC was split and HNLC borns in the Khasi Jaintia State.

The original HNLC leadership consisted of:

●Bobby Marwein, Commander-in-Chief

→Julius K Dorphang resigned and surrendered to the Government of India on 24 July 2007, as a result of the internal differences within HNLC.

On 2014, the Government of Meghalaya offers a kind of peace talk with all the outfits of the State and also encourages the outfit to come forward to the table of peace and thereby to bilateral cease fire between the government and the militants group. So the outfit HNLC agrees to receive the offer of the government but only if the government appoint the middle person as interlocutor.

Infact, the outfit’s objective is not bloodshed so recently the proscribed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) declared its offer for unilateral ceasefire and later it consider as “invalid” even as it threatened to strike as retaliation against the alleged step-motherly attitude of the Meghalaya government.

Earlier, the HNLC had also claimed responsibility for the blast incident which took place at Them

Mawbah (Jhalupara) that they  purposely detonated the RDX infront of the road roller at Them Mawbah to avoid human casualties as the RDX had the strength and intensity to blow up anything within 100 metres. This blast act as a threat to the public and to the outsiders to keep in mind that HNLC still alive. It also threatened to strike similar blast in the future. HNLC also alleged that, The police department is trying to hide facts and mislead the public, by making fabricated analysis to create confusions among the public.
