BIODIVERSITY  CONSERVATION  IN  MEGHALAYA

INTRODUCTION:-

             Biodiversity means the variety and variability among living organisms and the ecological complex in which they occurs. The term “biodiversity” was first coined by  E. O Wilson. It has got three level; species diversity, ecosystem diversity, and genetic diversity. Its merely offer a new, emotive term for some older ideas and program. In Meghalaya it is a treasure house of nature where a unique array of vegetation ranging from tropical, sub-tropical and temperature forest. This is due to its diverse topography, varied climate and adaptive condition of the State.

              Soil characteristic vary from one place to another with abundant rainfall and biotic activities that all attributed to its variety, richness and distribution of flora and fauna. The forest are very dense and have distinct stratification.

BIODIVERSITY IN MEGHALAYA:-

             Our State is rich in biodiversity. It has a complex ecosystem having numerable species.  Furthermore, nature has endowed Meghalaya with a rich nature vegetation, which is accordingly to the altitude, attitude, topography variation in rainfall etc,.  There are different types of trees that are found in this region. Some of them are oakes, pines, rhododendros, orchids, cimmamonun, mosses etc. It has also variety and bushes. In Meghalaya,  the areas of West Khasi Hills, a dense sub-tropical forest are found, especially along the river Khri and Umtru. Also most of the Hills in the State, are covered with mixed evergreen and Sal forest and Bamboo jungle. Toward the lower foot hills and terai region, a thick tropical forest are found in patches at different places.  Cane  and Bamboo formed a rich undergrowth of the lower hills. Therefore the State of Meghalaya has  plenty of forest resourse and large numbers of biodiversity that are not properly tapped.

SIGNAFICANCE OF BIODIVERSITY CONSERVATION IN MEGHALAYA:-

             Though it is necessary for human to avoid the benefit of  biodiversity,  it is equally important that biodiversity must be conserved in all of it form and utilized it in a sustainable manner. Conservation of biodiversity  serve a very crucial role in our life, because by conserving it , it provide us many things that we need for our daily life. As we know, it provide us with naturalmedicines  for many of the diseases and sickness that are being cured. This implies to the forest that we must conserve. Also, indirectly  forest are heart of living thing because trees provide the air we are breathing in. The State was received the highest rainfall because of conservation of biodiversity. Another most significance thing that we got from conservation of biodiversity is, a pure water from underground which is fit for drinking. Once we conserved the biodiversity, plants and animals species are also remain for which the plants or forest acts as the lungs of society. Further the conservation of biodiversity in our State are needed for our future generation.

PROTECTION OF BIODIVERSITY IN MEGHALAYA:-

             It is sad thing to note that inspite of all the natural beauty that we received from nature, we people do not care of it. We neglect the greatest gift of nature to us. We simply ruled out their lives and habitat and not let them grow freely as they like. So now, it is our duty to look forward to what step we need to protect them and let their species grow from generation to generation. So, let us follow some of the steps in order to protect and keep our biodiversity of  Meghalaya under control. They  are:

i)      Public awareness should be arranged  that it is important to protect our biodiversity

ii)    Protection and preservation of critical habitat of flora and fauna species and their wild relative.

iii)  Hunting of animals should be banned and prohibited.

iv)  Excessive use of factories, industries that emitted pollution should be restricted.

v)    Setting up of State park and wild life sanctuaries to safeguard the genetic diversity are to be promoted.

Therefore in our State a great deal of effort should be made for arriving at an international accord for the preservation and conservation a biodiversity.

CONCLUSION:-

             The earth is there to provide us the needs of mankinds, but in the  process of drawing from its bounties. Let us not forget that we must not disturb its stability. All living organism are an integral part of the biosphere and provide invaluable service. It will not be an exaggeration to say that survival of man depends on the survival of biosphere. Let us come together and protect our biodiversity.
